A Western Australian animal
The quokka is a small wallaby found on Wadjemup / Rottnest Island and the south-west Western Australian mainland. These herbivores eat native grasses and other plants, favouring young growth. During the day, they shelter in dense vegetation. Perth Zoo's species profile describes their diet, habitat and conservation status.
Perth and Wadjemup
Wadjemup lies off the coast of the Perth metropolitan area, 19 kilometres from Fremantle Port. The Whadjuk Noongar people are its Traditional Owners. The Rottnest Island Authority's introduction to Wadjemup explains the island's location and history.
That Western Australian connection is why we chose a quokka for Mentem. You can read more about the people building the products in our team profiles.
Respecting wild quokkas
Quokkas are listed as vulnerable. On Wadjemup, observe them from a distance, stay on established paths and let them forage for themselves. Do not touch, feed or give water to quokkas. Follow the Rottnest Island Authority's wildlife guidance when visiting.
